Picking colors is one of the first things I teach in Killer Halloween Party because simplifying your party decor to include 2-3 colors instead of 15 will make it look more cohesive…and more like all those Halloween party photos on Pinterest we both drool over. (You know the ones…)

So what happens when we apply that idea to Halloween decor?

It will elevate your decor and make your entire home look chicer. I know this isn’t a Halloween decorating idea for everyone – I’m honestly not sure I could do it permanently. But even if going monochromatic isn’t your style, I hope you’ll find a little inspiration in these images for your Halloween decorations this year!

Paint It Black

I have a sign in my bedroom that says, “She wears black but has the most colorful mind.” I love it because it describes me perfectly. But if I were to go monochromatic for Halloween, black would be my first stop.

If you pop over to Persia Lou’s site, she’ll teach you how she made these pumpkins candy holders and skull vase in just 20 minutes. I’d keep that skull vase out all year long!

 

White Out

Or, you could do in the complete opposite direction and do all white decor. I love this set-up from Randi Garrett Design because I can image how stunning – and spooky – it would look at night with all the candles lit. I might throw a ghost or two in for a bit more Halloween, but I love this for inspiration.

 

Basic Black & White

Now let’s get really crazy and MIX black and white together!

If you wanted to keep it super chic, you could stick to JUST these two colors like this mantel. I love layering like this when I decorate (see last year’s living room decor for proof), and keeping it to just two colors allows you to mix patterns and textures without it looking so busy it assaults your eyes.

But Miranda, that’s so boring. I need color! Okay, okay…let’s add some…

 

Orange Pop!

How’s that? Just the smallest hint of orange!

Haha, okay, I know…you probably want more color than that, but I love the idea of only using pumpkins to add a bit of color. They’re such a fun way to call attention to the season, and there are SO many types of pumpkins for sale these days that you could easily mix and match sizes, not just Jack Be Littles like this setup by She’s Crafty.

 

Orange All Over

Need more orange? I love this bookcase from Turtle Creek Lane. While I might want to mix up my decor items more than this, I love the pops of orange on every shelf that pull your eye in.

 

Pick Your Purple

The fun part of going monochromatic is you can mix shades of a single color to create interest in your display, like this party table from Kara’s Party Ideas. I love the combination of lavender and soft violet with the stark black and white.

 

Pretty in Pink

Here’s one more from Kara’s Party Ideas that I love. Pastel Halloween is a trend that is quickly picking up steam (check out the pastel endcap at At Home if you don’t believe me!), and it’s a great way for those of you who don’t love the traditional colors of Halloween to make this holiday more your own style. I also love the juxtaposition of such a feminine color against decor like skulls and ghosts.

 

Metallic Monster Mash

Love metallics? Adding pops of gold into your decor would be a fun way to glam it up, like this mantel from Hey Let’s Make Stuff.

 

Cohesive Colors

So you might be looking at these ideas and thinking, “Okay, that’s great…but these all look staged.” Well, here’s a real-world example from Average But Inspired that I love!

She took the existing colors in her art above her fireplace and incorporated it into her Halloween decor – every spooky piece has a bit of orange, red or gold in it to give this a cohesive look.

 

Neatly Neutral

If you want to keep it super simple, drop a few neutrals into your decor. I love the simplicity the gold, brown and green bring into this mantel by Tatertots & Jello. (What a blog name!)

I’m also completely obsessed with that skull frame which she made from laser cut fabric and an old bulletin board frame – stunning!

 

Green with Envy

I love what my blogging buddy Cheyenne did with her mantel last Halloween! The touches of green in her decor are just the thing to add a bit of color while maintaining her stunning French country vibe. (And her DIY birdhouses are such a clever idea!)

 

Greener with Envy
