So far I’ve shared gift guides, a DIY and even my favorite recipe for making Halloween gingerbread cookies, but we haven’t talked a ton about decorating.

That changes today with nine quick ideas for making your home a little more spooky for the holidays.

I’m not decorating a ton this holiday season because I’m moving right before Dec. 25 (yes, I’m crazy. I know.), but that doesn’t mean all my ideas I spent the year dreaming up have to go to waste!

Here are nine decorating ideas for Spooky Christmas:

1. Decorate a Halloween Christmas Tree

If you caught my 18 things to buy now for Spooky Christmas post back in September, you know one of the things I keep an eye out for is Halloween ornaments.

My four-foot black three got filled with jack-o-lantern jingle bells and ornaments from the Hallmark Halloween series last year. I love how it turned out!

2. Add Halloween ornaments in unexpected places

Last year I hung these jack-o-lantern ornaments on a garland on my bookshelf to make my living room a little more spooky. I also threw some into a hurricane vase on my coffee table (see it here). Ornaments don’t have to be confined to a tree. Get creative!

3. Create a Halloween holiday garland

I have a little peek inside this DIY coming next week. Create a traditional holiday garland…but totally Halloweenify it! (Can you spot mine in the mix from the garland-making party I attended?)

These are great for mantels, on top of bookshelves or hanging on banisters if you have a staircase in your home.

4. Make a Halloween holiday wreath

This is one DIY that’s been lingering on my to-do list…and I probably won’t get to this year, so I’m thrilled my pal Callie Jo, aka Halloween Head, has this “Nightmare Before Christmas”-inspired wreath on her blog! Head over to her post to learn how she made it.

5. String up Halloween lights

In seventh grade, I put a string of blue lights up in my bedroom for Christmas…and I think they finally came down after I graduated from college when my parents repainted the room. Decorating with lights is one of my favorite things, period (my apartment is covered in white lights all year), so adding some merry and bright touches with Halloween colored lights is a must for my Spooky Christmas.

6. Fill the yard with spooky inflatables

If I had a yard, I’d totally be THIS house come December 1. You can grab this Santa Jack over on Amazon.

7. Build a Halloween gingerbread house

I know this one bleeds into Halloween season a bit already, but I really love the idea of spooky gingerbread houses. You can grab a kit for the one above here. This would be perfect for setting on a side table all season…or eating immediately.

8. Make Jack Skellington’s Spider Snowflakes

Kudos to The Spooky Vegan for finding this tutorial! One of these years, I’m going to fill the Spooky Little Apartment with these snowflakes…since it’s as close to snow as I’ll usually get in Houston.

9. Leave up Halloween!

When all else fails…just leave up your Halloween decor all year!

How do you decorate for Spooky Christmas?

I’d love to hear how you’re decorating this year – share it in the comments!

Happy haunting,
