For me, they’re a way to mark time by doing something special with my friends and family, like hosting my Halloween party or carving pumpkins while watching “Nightmare Before Christmas”. And the best part? If you don’t like them…make up your own! (We’ll talk more about Spooky Christmas traditions later this month…)

One tradition that always fascinates me come December is the sending of holiday cards. In the grand scheme of things, this is a relatively modern practice. Like many current Christmas traditions, it began with the Victorians – in 1843, to be exact.

And the reason it began? Henry Cole, a prominent educator in England, needed a quick way to say hello to his many, many friends during the holiday season. (Read more.)

The practice caught on and soon sending holiday greetings to all your friends and family became a tradition – one that we still practice to this day.

I’ll admit: I’m not one to send holiday cards out. (I’ll stick with my Halloween card exchange!) But this is one practice where you can really set yourself apart and tell your loved ones Happy Holidays from the bottom of your spooky little heart with a unique card.
